ACTIVITY 7: CATALOG AND INSURE BELONGINGS
Goal: Know what you have and how to insure it.
Assignment:
Create a video walkthrough of your home. Open cupboards, drawers, closets, and storage areas, and record the contents. Be sure to include the exterior of your home as well — including your garage and any outbuildings.
Even if you don’t create a detailed written inventory, this recording can help jog your memory when completing insurance paperwork after a loss. It may also serve as helpful proof of ownership.
Save your video to your EMERGENCY USB FLASH DRIVE
Next Level Prep:
Fill out information on your ACTIVITY TOOL for high-value items
Did you know that earthquake insurance is generally not included in a standard homeowners policy? Consider adding an earthquake endorsement to your policy — or purchasing a separate earthquake policy, depending on where you live.
ACTIVITY 8: DESIGNATE AND TEST YOUR OUT-OF-AREA CONTACTS
Goal: Identify someone outside of your area as your contact person to communicate safety.
Assignment:
Step 1: Choose a trusted friend or family member who lives outside your immediate area.
Step 2: Call them and explain their role. Let them know:
During a disaster, local cell networks may be overloaded.
Cell-to-cell calls within the affected area often won’t go through.
Calls placed outside the disaster area are more likely to connect.
Step 3: Clarify their responsibility:
They will serve as the designated “point person.”
Family and friends will contact them for updates.
They will relay information between those inside the disaster zone and those outside of it.
Step 4: Provide them with important information, including:
A list of household members and phone numbers
Workplace or school contact information
Addresses of likely evacuation locations
Any relevant medical or special needs information
Step 5: Make sure every member of your household has this contact’s phone number saved in their phone and written down in case devices are unavailable.
